PhD Scholarships. Languages and Linguistics

The University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts encourages applications for PhD scholarships to further enhance our growing strengths in Languages and Linguistics. Scholarships are available for commencement in either early or mid 2019.

1. Research environment and topics
Candidates are encouraged to consult the research interests of staff in the department ( and liaise with relevant staff regarding possible topics. The university deadline for applications is 17th October, so prospective students are advised to contact potential supervisors before that to have enough time to draft an application.

The School of Humanities and Social Inquiry has a vibrant, expanding graduate research community. It regularly hosts workshops, conferences and visiting speakers on a wide range of topics. Wollongong’s proximity to Sydney offers many opportunities to interact with other researchers in the greater Sydney area. High quality applications are encouraged for the main round scholarships (e.g. Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), University Postgraduate Award (UPA) or International Postgraduate Tuition Award (IPTA).

2. Eligibility and application details
Both domestic and international prospective students are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is for three and a half (3.5) years full-time with a stipend of $AUD 27,082 per annum (tax free and indexed annually).

PhD scholarship applicants should have:
- a record of excellent academic performance and have attained one of the following:
-- first-class Honours, Masters degree by research or equivalent;
-- additional relevant research experience and/or peer-reviewed research activity, awards and/or prizes will be regarded favourably.

Applicants are invited to discuss their proposed project with their prospective supervisor prior to submission.

Applicants should submit:
