The Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position start date is July 1, 2019.

We seek candidates whose research expertise is in Second Language Acquisition with a clear research agenda in theoretically driven experimental approaches or Second Language Education with a clear research agenda in Educational Technology or Language Teaching and Learning. Spanish must be the primary language of research focus. Research accomplishments in Heritage Linguistics would be an asset.

The successful candidate must have a PhD, or an equivalent doctoral degree, in Spanish Second Language Acquisition, Spanish Second Language Education, or a related area, by the start date of the appointment or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research. Excellence in research can be demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, research grants and awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations, submitted as part of the application. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish (i.e., ability to teach in Spanish at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs) and a functional level of English proficiency are required.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Language, Linguistics and/or Teaching and Learning courses in the field of Spanish at the Department of Language Studies, UTM and engage in the experiential learning activities offered in the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active, independent, innovative, internationally competitive, and externally funded program of research, to contribute to the education and training of undergraduate students as well as graduate students, and to develop innovative curriculum in Spanish. S/he will undertake graduate teaching and supervision as a member of the Graduate Department of Spanish and Portuguese (http://www.spanport.utoronto.ca/) or the Graduate Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/ctl/index.html), OISE, at the St George campus.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
