The Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor position in Latino/Chicano/Latin American Studies or in Spanish for Specific Purposes, to begin in Fall 2026. We seek an innovative and dynamic scholar whose research either bridges the fields of Latino, Chicano and Latin American Studies or specializes in the teaching of Spanish for specific purposes.

Candidates with expertise in Latino/Chicano/Latin American Studies should demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and transnational approaches in their scholarship, with U.S.-Mexico borderlands, Mexico, and Spanish-speaking Latin America as preferred geographical areas of expertise and with digital humanities, film studies, and/or multimodal methods or media as preferred secondary areas of expertise.

Candidates with expertise in the teaching of Spanish for Specific Purposes should have an active research agenda focusing on the teaching of Spanish for the professions, including (but not limited to) Translation and Interpreting, Spanish for Health, and/or Spanish for Legal.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Chicano Studies and Spanish; mentor undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom are first-generation Hispanic college students, and support their research and professional development in both academic and community contexts; and lead public-facing community engagement projects centered on local, regional, and transnational issues, fostering connections between scholarship and the broader community.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a field closely related to the candidate's area of expertise (e.g., Chicano Studies, Cultural Studies, Latino Studies, Latin American Studies, Spanish, Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies).
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish (to be assessed during the interview).
  • Active research agenda Latino/Chicano Studies/Latin American Studies or in Spanish for Specific Purposes, with a record of (or potential for) publishing in peer-reviewed outlets.
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing external research funding.
  • Ability to teach in both English and Spanish and to mentor students from Hispanic and first-generation college backgrounds.
  • Strong commitment to collaboration and the ability to contribute to transnational and interdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the department and across the College of Liberal Arts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with public scholarship or community-engaged projects that have a transnational or cross-border focus, particularly those connecting Latino and Latin American communities or advancing best practices in teaching Spanish for the professions.
  • Experience in administrative oversight of one or more academic programs.
  • Experience in securing external research funding
