The Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is hiring to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish in 18th Century Spanish Peninsular literature. The successful candidate will serve as the Lower Division Spanish Language Program Coordinator, starting in September 2024.

The department is seeking to hire an innovative and dynamic scholar who will bring a novel focus on 18th Century Spanish Peninsular literature within our Spanish program. The ideal candidate will have expertise in various areas of Peninsular Studies, including literature, theory, culture, film, and society, and will be able to teach language courses as well as more general undergraduate literature and culture courses related to Spain. Additionally, the successful applicant will have experience as the Spanish Lower Division coordinator, with the ability to emphasize the importance of language learning in a multicultural and global environment, and will possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills. It is understood that the coordinator will remain current in the field of Spanish language instruction at the collegiate level and will be familiar with the most recent teaching methods. The teaching load at UMass Lowell ranges from 3-3 to 2-1 depending on the faculty member's research productivity and publication record. The teaching load includes elementary Spanish courses (levels 1-4) and advanced Spanish courses taken by our majors and minors at the undergraduate level as needed. 

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the current upper division Spanish coordinator to provide goal-oriented leadership for instruction of 1000-and 2000-level Spanish courses. In addition to teaching responsibilities, key coordination duties include but are not limited to: guiding syllabus design; overseeing daily operations of the elementary and intermediate Spanish program; helping with short and long-term planning for the entire Spanish program; liaising with the Language Placement Exam coordinator on appropriate student placement; aiding the Department Chair with course scheduling, participating in extracurricular activities, and student advising. Moreover, the coordinator will organize the department's fall and spring orientation for Spanish faculty, cultivating multilingual and multicultural education initiatives across campus. Further responsibilities include active engagement in departmental, college, and university service and governance, student mentorship, and committee work.

The appointment is scheduled to begin September 1st, 2024. 

Requisitos 

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • An earned Ph.D. in Spanish with a focus on 18th century peninsular literature is required at the time of application.
  • Record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of academic appointment.
  • Experience in coordination of multi-section Spanish language courses (demonstrated organizational and management abilities).
  • Ability to work within an articulated program under the current upper-division Spanish coordinator.
  • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience advising undergrad students.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
