Greater complexity and higher efficiency: Effects of translanguaging during collaborative pre-task planning on EFL learners’ speaking performance
Xinran Luo, Peijian Paul Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Translanguaging has thrived as a pedagogy for second language (L2) acquisition because of its potential in maximizing L2 learners’ communicative repertoire. However, limited attention has been paid to how translanguaging can influence L2 speaking within the framework of task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study explored how different language use (i.e., L2 only and translanguaging) in collaborative pre-task planning contributed to L2 learners’ subsequent monologic speaking performance, as measured by complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF), and idea units. The planning behaviours were also examined to offer explanations for the differences in learners’ speaking performance. Altogether 72 undergraduate students from a Chinese university voluntarily participated in this study. The results showed that translanguaging planning...

Translanguaging through performance: Comparative repetition pedagogy in Arabic–English university EFL classrooms
Mohammed Alshaikhi (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Spoken communication remains limited in many Arabic-speaking university English as a foreign language (EFL) settings, where accuracy often outweighs experimentation. This study examines comparative repetition pedagogy (CRP), a bilingual instructional framework developed by Alshaikhi, integrating drama, role play, and task-based reflection. A longitudinal mixed-methods design was implemented with 120 male English-major students in Saudi Arabia. Quantitative data were collected through a willingness to communicate questionnaire, and qualitative data included observations, reflection logs, bilingual adaptations, and two semi-structured teacher interviews. Findings indicate increased willingness to communicate and emerging rhetorical awareness, though these patterns should be interpreted cautiously within the study’s contextual and...

CLIL as a pathway for cross-curricular and translingual classroom practices: A comparative quantitative study on Scottish and Spanish teachers’ views
Xabier San Isidro (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: AICLE/CLIL

Resumen:

Despite the numerous attempts to characterize Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), the specialized literature has shown a dearth of cross-contextual studies on how stakeholders conceptualize classroom practice. This article presents the results of a two-phase comparative quantitative study on teachers’ views on CLIL design, implementation and results in two different contexts, Scotland (n = 127) and Spain (n = 186). The first phase focused on the creation, pilot-testing and validation of the research tool. The second phase consisted in administering the final questionnaire and analysing the results. The primary goals were (1) to ascertain whether practitioners’ perceptions on CLIL effects and classroom practices match the topics addressed by research; and (2) to analyse and compare teachers’ views in the two contexts. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Texto completo

In a telecollaboration (or ‘virtual exchange’) between teacher candidates (TCs) from Türkiye and the United States (U.S.), U.S. TCs experience various elements of translingual practice as potential challenge to their monolingual backgrounds. The challenges occur as TCs from the U.S. context work to fulfill, with Turkish assistance, collaborative final projects: a K-6 learning resource in the form of ‘kamishibai’, digital story, or translanguaging children’s book. Analysis in the article draws on various data sources, including the final projects, recorded video interactions between U.S. and Turkish TCs, and written reflections by U.S. TCs. The analysis aims to answer the following research...

The Effectiveness of Multilingual Versus Monolingual Approaches to L2 Teaching and Learning: A Meta-Analysis of Learning Outcomes
Meixiu Zhang, Amanda Brown (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: uso de la L1 en el aula

Resumen:

The debate on multilingual (codeswitching) versus monolingual (immersive, target-language only) approaches to second language (L2) teaching has received renewed attention in recent decades. Both approaches are employed in L2 teaching and learning, supported by competing philosophies regarding the need for maximal L2 input and the facilitative potential of first language (L1) inclusion. Given a growth in experimental research comparing the effectiveness in terms of learning outcomes of the two approaches in L2 classrooms, this meta-analysis study investigates the effects of multilingual versus monolingual approaches on outcomes as measured by language assessments and examines the variables (age, proficiency, learning context, target skill area, and procedure for learning) that moderate such effects. We conducted a comprehensive search...

Implementation of translingual pedagogies in EAL writing: A systematic review
Yachao Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Translingual pedagogies have been proposed and implemented to respond to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in today’s classrooms. However, the findings of translingual pedagogies on English as an additional language (EAL) writing vary from facilitating to undermining teaching and learning. To understand the empirical landscape of this young and fast-growing research area, I systematically reviewed 62 studies with a research synthesis method to explore what translingual activities have been implemented and how they have impacted EAL writing teaching and learning (including both K-12 and post-secondary contexts). The findings reveal that various translingual activities, such as self-reflective writing and literacy narrative, have been enacted in EAL writing teaching and learning. These activities have been practiced in...

Pedagogical translanguaging integration into the pre-writing stage in an EMI higher education context
Zeynep Ceyhan Bingöl, Yonca Özkan (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Globalization and technological advancements have expanded human interaction and mobility, leading to increased multilingualism and multiculturalism. In response, English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching approaches have shifted from English-medium instruction (EMI) toward more multilingual approaches, including translanguaging. As a flexible pedagogy, translanguaging has gained growing attention in educational research. Accordingly, this study, an abridged version of a doctoral dissertation (Ceyhan Bingöl, 2024), conducted at the tertiary level in Türkiye, investigates whether there is a significant difference in the paragraph writing performance of English language learners exposed to a pedagogical translanguaging-integrated pre-writing stage and an English-only pre-writing stage in an EMI context at the tertiary level in Türkiye...
