Estudiar en un país donde el español es la lengua mayoritaria le proporciona al aprendiente de español L2 un contexto con enormes posibilidades de participar en conversaciones reales, compartir experiencias y construir relaciones, lo que conduce al desarrollo de sólidas habilidades sociales y comunicativas en español. En la práctica, sin embargo, la evidencia empírica no siempre valida la conexión hipotética entre el potencial para una mayor interacción, por una parte, y el desarrollo lingüístico, por otra. Este artículo analiza constructos, predicciones y evidencias vinculadas a la interacción como motor del desarrollo de la L2 en contextos de inmersión en el extranjero, e incluye estrategias comprobadas para cerrar la brecha entre las posibilidades y los resultados. The aim of this introduction is to set the scene and present the three contexts on focus in the monograph and justify this choice of topic within second language acquisition (SLA) research, the perspective taken in this volume. Starting with the latter, in the past two decades the examination of the effects of different contexts of acquisition has attracted the attention of researchers, based on the idea that ?the study of SLA within and across various contexts of learning forces a broadening of our perspective of the different variables that affect and impede acquisition in general? (Collentine & Freed 2004: 157).

Resumen:

This study compares metalinguistic awareness of students in a one-way partial Spanish immersion (IMM) program to that of their English-only (ENG) counterparts at the same school. Students in grades 3 and 5 from each program completed a sentence grammaticality judgment task in English delivered orally. Measures of IMM students? Spanish proficiency were included to examine the relationship between L2 Spanish ability and metalinguistic awareness. Grade 5 IMM students outperformed ENG students on the grammatically anomalous sentences, but no difference was found at grade 3. For the semantically anomalous sentences, IMM students outperformed their ENG counterparts at grade 3, but the reverse was true for grade 5.
