As language departments increasingly face enrollment concerns, empirical research can provide insights regarding students? reasons to study Spanish. Motivation has a key influence in learners? success and can be internal (e.g., an intrinsic desire or passion for learning) or external (e.g., imposed by others). This study examined motivational factors (motives) for students (N = 149) enrolled in the first required, last required, and first elective Spanish undergraduate courses. Seven motivational categories were examined: Integrative, Instrumental, Intrinsic, Ideal self, Ought-to self, Wish for language proficiency, and Political context. The present study applies critical race theory and a raciolinguistic perspective to understand the orientations of language programs in the United States towards developing bilingualism. More specifically, the study draws on survey and in-depth interview data from self-identified Latinx Spanish-English bilinguals who participated in English-dominant and bilingual curricula. We establish that the practices and policies of extant programs are grounded in injurious ideologies that result in the racialization of Latinx students. It has been argued that a learner?s L1 articulatory tendency to produce an American English ?retroflex? tongue shape as opposed to a ?bunched? one can facilitate Spanish trill acquisition. This is because the American English retroflex is articulated by moving the tongue apex towards the alveolar ridge, while the ?bunched? articulation is produced by moving the tongue apex down in the opposite direction to the trill. This study examines this articulatory hypothesis by analyzing the tongue shape of two anglophone learners of Spanish. Each year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of undergraduate students enroll in introductory Spanish courses. For many students, passing these classes is a prerequisite for graduation. Consequently, it is imperative that the exams used in these courses are of the highest possible quality. For decades, the Rasch model (a special case of logistic regression) has been used to evaluate high-stakes language assessment, but has rarely been applied to exams used in classrooms. The current study employs the Rasch model to evaluate a midterm exam administered in the fourth week of an introductory Spanish class (n = 399 across 17 sections). Si tenemos en cuenta que la movilidad transnacional y los contactos interpersonales se han incrementado exponencialmente en las últimas décadas, no resulta extraño que de manera paralela haya crecido el interés por la investigación sobre interculturalidad en el ámbito de la enseñanza de lenguas. Una de las principales motivaciones que ha conducido a desarrollar este tipo de investigación tiene que ver con la necesidad cada vez más acuciante de adquirir competencia intercultural, tanto en entornos personales, como en los profesionales y educativos. A ello se añade la creciente exigencia en las sociedades digitalizadas de comunicarse de forma eficaz e interculturalmente adecuada, también en entornos virtuales.

This article considers the role of Spanish as a global language by examining its use in London, a global, multilingual and superdiverse city, where Spanish has no official status. I consider how pluricentric norms, panhispanism, and the emerging Nueva Política Lingüística Panhispánica (NPLP) find expression. In particular, I ask how regional and national varieties of Spanish are perceived by L1 and L2 learners and how these attitudes construct local language ideologies held by different actors. I profile two institutions where language ideologies and linguistic practice can be examined.
