This paper explores the potential of studies on instructed second language acquisition to inform pedagogical practices for L2 teaching. It focuses on instructional-effect studies published between 2000 and 2024 that examined the acquisition of perfective and imperfective past tense in L2 Spanish, French, and Catalan. Eleven studies were selected based on pretest-posttest designs and evidence of interlanguage development in past morphology. Key findings indicate that perfective forms are typically acquired earlier and more robustly than imperfective forms, regardless of instructional approach or language. The analysis reveals consistent acquisition patterns, suggesting that effective teaching practices can be derived from these studies. Engagement with research has long been recognized as a key driver of improved language teaching practices and teachers’ professional growth. Yet, language teaching practitioners often remain distanced from research activities, thus perpetuating a well-documented gap between research and practice. While much of the existing scholarship has centered on English language teaching, this study shifts the focus on the rapidly growing field of Spanish language teaching (SLT). Teacher training programs and models recognize research engagement as a key competency of qualified professionals. However, despite current calls from scholars to bridge the divide between research and practice in second language teaching, little is known about how teaching professionals engage with existing research or carry out their own research. This study is the first to address this issue with regards to Spanish Language Teaching (SLT) professionals, aiming to understand if and how they engage with and in research, and identify what they would need to increase their engagement.
